The British Open is the oldest of the four major golf championships and is usually referred to as simply The Open.
It takes place on the weekend of the third Friday in July and is the only one of the so called golf ‘majors’ to take place outside of the US.
The event takes place on one of nine links courses in England or Scotland and was first played at Prestwick Golf Club, Ayrshire, Scotland in October 1860.
